Organized at Detroit, Michigan, the 1st Michigan Regiment Infantry mustered September 16, 1861. The following is only a partial synopsis of regiment activities. The regiment served in Maryland until May 1862, then in Virginia for the remainder of 1862, where the 1st Infantry was engaged in several battles, including Mechanicsville (June), Bull Run (August), and Fredericksburg (December).
